Honing uses a special tool, called a honing stone or a hone, to achieve a precision surface. The hone is composed of abrasive grains that are bound together with an adhesive. Generally, honing grains are irregularly shaped and about 10 to 50 micrometers in diameter (300 to 1,500 mesh grit). Smaller grain sizes produce a smoother surface on the work piece.

GUIDE LINE FOR HONING ALLOWANCES:

Honing Allowances =2 x Rt OF Premachined Finish+2 x Pre machining Dimensional Error. Cutting Speed = the axial speed is to be between 5-25m/min, and in special cases up to 33m/min. With diamond the peripheral speed should be between 40-80m/min. When CBN is used the most favorable range of speed is between 35-60m/min.

The following are general rules which apply to honing with all bonds:

For maximum material removal rates, use coarse mesh sizes and lower concentrations.

For maximum material rates. Use narrow stones at high speed with only sufficient pressure to assure free cutting.

The harder the steel, the lower the effective material removal rate (but good finishes are usually easies to obtain).For fine finishes. Use fine mesh sizes and relatively high concentrations. For fine finishes. Where material removal is secondary, use wider stones. In general though, stones are narrower than the comparative aluminum oxide stones.

Use the highest speed possible consistent with long stone life and high material removal rates. BORAZON CBN stones can hone at low honing speeds, but their effectiveness usually increases at the speed increases. Use the lowest machine pressure consistent with free cutting. Interrupted cuts require higher concentrations and/or harder bonds.

Always use an adequate supply of coolant, high material removal rates require sufficient coolant to cleanse the stones, clear the chips and cool the work piece.
